A (complete) sentence . . .- has a subject.
- has a verb. - expresses a complete idea (and therefore can stand alone as a complete sentence). - begins with a capital letter. - ends with end punctuation (a period, a question mark, or an exclamation mark). |
A clause . . .- has a subject and a verb.
- may not express a complete idea—and in such a case may not be able to stand alone as a complete sentence (= a dependent clause). - may express a complete idea—and in such a case, can stand alone as a complete sentence (= an independent clause). |
Some verbs are transitive, which means they must be followed by an object.
Example: Raise I raised my hand to volunteer. (It is not possible to say, "I raised." This is not a complete sentence.) |

Example: Rise The sun rises in the east. / The sun rises. (It is not possible to say, "I raised." This is not a complete sentence.) |
